The farm stand is not quite a shop. It is more like a long wooden table where the Valley places useful things, delicious things, and the occasional object nobody remembers bringing.

Today’s first market basket contains:

  • One striped gourdChosen for excellent character.
  • A small jar of pumpkin butterFor toast, biscuits, or secret spoonfuls.
  • Two cider applesOne sweet, one tart.
  • A packet of sunflower seedsSaved from the Golden Field.
  • A pocket lanternMarked: “For the walk home.”

The basket is wrapped in brown paper and tied with green string. The Bookkeeper has left the price blank.
